# Debat: Er kunstig intelligens en miljøsynder eller en bæredygtig løsning?

Kunstig intelligens er et af de mest debatterede emner inden for teknologi i anden halvdel af januar 2023\. Der er skrevet en masse om, hvordan kunstig intelligens kan forbedre vores liv og effektivisere vores hverdag, på godt og ondt. Som med alle andre digitale teknologier, er der også miljømæssige konsekvenser ved brugen af kunstig intelligens. Det gælder både træning af modellerne, og især den massive brug af de store sprogmodeller som ChatGPT, som vi ser lige nu. 

CO2-aftrykket fra træning og brug af kunstig intelligens er et støt voksende problem, da det kræver en stor mængde energi at drive og køle datacentrene. Udbredelsen af kunstig intelligens eksploderer lige nu, hvor alle de store aktører, såsom Google, Microsoft, OpenAI, Meta m.fl., vil have hver deres del af kagen. Men det er ikke nødvendigvis alt sammen kun negativt: Kunstig intelligens kan også hjælpe med at reducere vores CO2-aftryk ved at optimere industrielle processer og hjælpe os med at træffe mere bæredygtige beslutninger, f.eks. i forbindelse med nye transportløsninger. Det kan være svært at acceptere, at vi skal påvirke miljøet på denne måde for at få glæde af AI's fordele.

I denne artikel vil vi forsøge at undersøge miljøfaktorerne ved kunstig intelligens, herunder træning og brug, og hvordan det påvirker vores CO2-aftryk. Vi vil også lægge op til en undersøgelse af, hvordan kunstig intelligens kan hjælpe med at reducere vores CO2-aftryk og bidrage til en mere bæredygtig fremtid.

Artiklen er tænkt som et oplæg til debat i undervisningen og indeholder en samling links til kilder, der handler om CO2-aftryk og kunstig intelligens. Lad os tage udgangspunkt i et citat fra EU's magasin "Horizon - the EU Research & Innovation Magazine":

## Miljøsynderen

Den første betragtning er den miljøbelastning, som det koster at drive kunstig intelligens som f.eks. ChatGPT. Der er flere, der har forsøgt at estimere, hvad det har af betydning for klimaet:

> *1 million users with 10 questions each =* 
> **29,167 h. of A100 GPU time per day** 
> *29,167 hours \* 407W = *11,870kWh per day** 
> *0.000322167 \* 11,870 = *3.82 tCO₂e per day (California emmision used)**

For slet ikke at tænke på miljøbelastningen ved træning af ChatGPT, som den danske data forsker [Kasper Groes Albin Ludvigsen](https://kaspergroesludvigsen.medium.com/?source=post%5Fpage-----66932314627d--------------------------------) også nævner i sin artikel:

> *ChatGPT is based on a version of GPT-3\. It has been estimated that training GPT-3 consumed 1,287 MWh which emitted *552 tons CO2e**

Et andet bud på en beregning af energiforbrug til træning er denne:

> *The latest language models include billions and even trillions of weights. One popular model, GPT-3, has 175 billion machine learning parameters. It was trained on NVIDIA V100, but researchers have calculated that using A100s would have taken 1,024 GPUs, 34 days and $4.6million to train the model. Alle disse beregninger er estimater, da OpenAI ikke har fremlagt konkrete oplysninger, der viser, hvilken hardware der er brugt. (Der er i øvrigt heller ikke skøn over tids- og strømforbrug.) De nævnte estimater er dog fornuftige og måske endda lidt konservative. De fortæller os imidlertid, at det ikke er gratis rent klimamæssigt at benytte kunstig intelligens. **Læg mærke til, at beregningerne er lavet med en million daglige brugere**. Disse var status efter bare én uge med ChatGPT! 

Den 2\. februar skrev flere medier, at det estimeres at ChatGPT nåede **100 millioner aktive brugere** i januar 2023! Som sammenligning tog det Tiktok 9 måneder og Spotify 4 1/2 år, at nå 100 millioner brugere. ChatGPT formodes at være det hurtigst voksende it-produkt nogensinde og på niveau med Pokemon Go.

## En bæredygtig løsning?

Den anden betragtning er, at mange forskere mener, vi er nødt til at bruge kunstig intelligens for at bekæmpe eller reducere CO2-udledning.

Modeller baseret på kunstig intelligens kan hjælpe med at analysere store mængder data og identificere tendenser og mønstre, der på sigt kan forbedre effektiviteten af klimaindsatsen. For eksempel kan kunstig intelligens bruges til at overvåge og modellere klimaændringer, forudsige vejret og analysere data om CO2-udledninger, for at hjælpe med at reducere emissionsniveauer. Kunstig intelligens kan også bruges til at optimere brugen af ren energi og hjælpe med at designe mere bæredygtige boliger og infrastruktur.
